Chapter newsletters recognized

Five UUP chapters were recognized for outstanding newsletters during the union's 2000-2001 Journalism Contest.

"These chapters -- and all chapters that make an effort to produce a regular newsletter -- know the importance of communications in building a strong, effective union," said UUP President Bill Scheuerman.

This year's winners among chapters of fewer than 1,000 members are:

General Excellence: SUNY Geneseo/Colleagues, best in class and honorable mention (for special parody issue dedicated to former statewide officer Tom Matthews), and SUNY Farmingdale/Unifier, award of merit.

Best Editorial or Column: SUNY Farmingdale/Unifier, honorable mention.

The winners among chapters of more than 1,000 members are:

General Excellence: Syracuse HSC/The Advisor, best in class; Stony Brook HSC/Bridges, award of merit; and SUNY Binghamton/Connection, honorable mention.

Best Feature Story: SUNY Binghamton/Connection, best in class, and Syracuse HSC, The Advisor, award of merit.

Best Editorial or Column: Stony Brook HSC/Bridges, best in class; SUNY Binghamton/Connection, award of merit; and Syracuse HSC/The Advisor, honorable mention.

Best Art or Photo: Stony Brook HSC/Bridges, best in class.

A panel of three independent journalists and public relations professionals judged the entries.
