The Voice November 2001 To the Point:
Thanks to the heroes By William E. Scheuerman The horror of Sept. 11, and all its ramifications, momentarily stunned our nation as we came to grips with the national and personal tragedies that resulted from the violence. But as is typical of Americans, our response has been deliberate and forceful in the face of this treacherous act.
Americans — especially New Yorkers — are once again showing our resiliency and resolve. Heroes are emerging. Leaders are stepping forward. Despair is giving way to determination. Amid the grief and anger, we have pride. I am especially proud of the many women and men of UUP who have selflessly responded to the needs of the citizenry. Health care workers from our health science centers treated the injured, and many are still working long hours at Ground Zero assisting in the grim, but necessary, task of identifying the remains of thousands of innocent victims of the terror. Our counselors, military reservists and hundreds of volunteers willing to do whatever is needed are there, selflessly serving at a crucial time in our country’s history. Our hearts ache for the victims, and they are filled with pride and respect for the many heroes of this tragic event.
Our recent Fall Delegate Assembly (DA) was held as scheduled on Long Island to show our sisters and brothers that we’re not afraid, that we’re united and that we understand that an injury to one is an injury to all. The first day of the DA was dedicated to the remembrance of the thousands — including many union members — lost in the terrorist attacks. We also recognized the thousands more — including members of the UUP and SUNY families — who have stepped forward in rescue and recovery efforts. At this meeting we passed the hat and raised about $3,500 in donations, which UUP will match and donate to the NYSUT 9-11 Disaster Relief Fund. Individual chapters are launching fund-raisers to help the victims and their families, and some are organizing blood drives with the Red Cross so that our members can give the “gift of life.” We also passed a resolution urging tolerance and decency toward all members of our human family during these very difficult times. Prior to the DA, we negotiated an agreement with the governor’s office that protects the interests of all UUPers called to active military duty.
Yes, vicious acts of terrorism have wrought problems and uncertainty. Many Americans are now uncertain about their physical safety and the safety of loved ones; many more are concerned with the long-term economic impact of the terror, as costs mount while public revenues plummet. But when we see how UUPers, New Yorkers and other Americans have risen to meet the challenges unexpectedly thrown at us by the tsunami of Sept. 11, we should stand with great pride and security knowing that we shall overcome. Having seen our people respond to inconceivable horror in a rational and constructive way, I feel great about our union and our ability to meet any challenge that comes our way. Let the world know that UUP stands united with open hearts, open minds and a willingness to do whatever it takes to overcome the unimaginable. I thank you all.
