NYSUT journalism contest winners

Stony Brook HSC’s chapter newsletter, Bridges, earned four awards in NYSUT’s annual statewide journalism competition sponsored by The New York Teacher. The chapter won first-place awards for best article on health issues (“The five secrets of becoming an exerciser” by Steven Jonas), best report on community outreach (“An ounce of prevention saves two lives” by Kathleen Southerton) and new member issues (“You say you want a resolution?” by Carolyn Kube). The newsletter also won an award of merit for best feature story (“A tribute to Edward J. Lane” by statewide VP for Professionals John Marino). The awards were presented during NYSUT’s 2002 Representative Assembly last month in New York City. Outstanding service

Air National Guardman and UUPer Fazal Hussain of SUNY Downstate was recently awarded the U.S. Air Force Public Health Officer of the Year Award for his service at Ground Zero to help the victims of the World Trade Center attack on Sept. 11. He is pictured with Col. Deneice Van Hook.
