ING can put your finances in order

Just this week, I heard three members tell me they don’t even open their pension and Optional Retirement Program (ORP) statements. While that might put off the depression, don’t ignore those investments. Now, more than ever, is the time to contact your ORP representative to talk about the future (or just to calm your fears).

As you know, UUP endorses ING for its 403(b) program, Opportunity Plus. Your ING representative can help you make sure you have your financial house in order.

The following are some of the items you might want to discuss:

  • Reassess your long-term calculations — Step one in planning is to look at the numbers and assess where and when you would like to retire. Look at several scenarios.
  • Review your overall asset allocation — Having more than one fund in your retirement savings does not mean you are measurably diversified. Review your overall long-term savings as one portfolio and investigate the opportunities to be better diversified. Ask your ING rep to analyze your diversification using its Modern Portfolio Theory.
  • SUNY retirement plan — Unlike your predecessors, who had only a few options, you now have the choice of dozens of investment alternatives and a broad array of choices in how to receive distributions on those assets while in retirement. Research the alternatives.
  • Estate planning — Because many of us have a great deal of our assets inside of retirement plans, our estates could be facing both income and estate taxes. It is possible to have these combined taxes reduce our estates by more than 50 percent. Ask about estate-preservation strategies.

If you do not know the ING representative assigned to your campus, give ING a call at (800) 677-4636.

Financial counseling offered

The Financial Counseling Program brought to bargaining unit members by Ernst & Young LLP through the NYSUT Benefit Trust can help with the many issues, large and small, that affect financial security.

The program includes four main features: the Financial Planner Line, Focused Financial Analyses, Understanding Personal Finances newsletter, and referral for in-person fiscal planning consultation.

The Financial Planner Line is the first point of contact when requesting financial planning assistance. Members can call for answers to financial planning concerns and for information on the program. Experienced, full-time personal financial-planning counselors staff this program.

Members can easily assess their current financial situation in relation to their desired goal by requesting a Focused Financial Analysis from Ernst & Young. Members select a topic from a menu of financial planning areas. Answers to a targeted questionnaire provide the basis for personalization of the report, which also suggests savings strategies, action steps, tips and planning resources.

Members also receive Ernst & Young’s bimonthly newsletter, Understanding Personal Finances. Issues focus on specific financial planning topics.

Finally, if members want an in-person financial planning consultation, they can request this through the Financial Planner Line. This service has an additional fee.

The annual fee to enroll in the Financial Counseling Program is $79. This fee is reduced to $73 when purchased through payroll or pension deduction. Members not completely satisfied can return the Certificate of Coverage within 30 days of receipt to NYSUT Benefit Trust for a full refund.
