Bathroom prototype wins design award — A “universal bathroom” developed by an architectural team from SUNY Buffalo’s School of Architecture and Planning has won the Bronze Award in the 2001 American Society of Aging (ASA) competition for new products for mature markets.

Abir Mullick, an associate professor of architecture, and Edward Steinfeld, a professor of architecture, won the award in the competition’s professional category. They, along with Drew Kelly, were recently recognized in New Orleans at the first joint conference of ASA and the National Council on the Aging.

The award was presented for two working bathroom prototypes: a movable fixtures bathroom and a moveable panels bathroom, both of which offer exceptional benefits to the manufacturer and the consumer.

Top nurse — Doris Weisman, a nurse practitioner in gynecology and cytology at Stony Brook HSC, has been presented with a Cancer Control Award by the American Cancer Society. Weisman was cited for her active role in cancer control, combating the disease through early detection, referrals, patient care services and community outreach.

Last year, Weisman was named a Nurse of Excellence by Stony Brook HSC. She is assistant director of nursing at the hospital.
