UUP legislative intern named

Annie Virkus, a graduate student at SUNY Albany’s Nelson A. Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy, was recently named UUP’s newest John M. Reilly legislative intern.

A native of Wellsville in Allegany County, Virkus is working 20 hours a week in UUP’s Administrative Office. Her responsibilities include scheduling meetings for the union’s volunteer lobbyists, attending UUP’s legislative functions, tracking bills and other duties related to the union’s 2002 political program. Her internship will run through the spring semester.

In her new role, Virkus, 22, is “looking forward to getting hands-on experience in how the legislative process works,” she said.

She received a bachelor of arts degree in anthropology from SUNY Albany in May 2001, and expects to earn a master’s degree in public administration in May 2003.

The internship is named after former UUP President John M. Reilly of SUNY Albany, who presided over the union from 1987-93.
