The Voice January 2002
The faces of UUP
UUPers in action: The phrase may evoke images of unionists picketing and protesting.
UUPers in action, though, depicts that and so much more. During the last few months, the many faces of UUP emerged in the face of tragedy upon this nation. Recent issues of The Voice have described union members’ help with rescue efforts. Their work has been an awakening on many levels, not the least of which is a realization of what colleagues do with their skills as a contribution to their communities.
There are also the day-to-day actions of academic and professional faculty that are so important in making the world a better place, especially for students seeking to improve their lives through education. Witness the librarian, the doctor, the financial aid advisor, the professor or the research scientist.
Come with us as we visit UUPers in their roles as mentors, teachers, activists and advocates.

Culinary artist: UUPer Julee Miller, a culinary arts instructor at SUNY Delhi, won a gold medal with her “wood Nymph” sculpture during the International Hotel, Motel and Restaurant Show, held last month at the Jacob K. Javitz Convention Center in New York City. Her sculpture, which is a special mixture of flour and salt, also won a gold medal at a regional American Culinary Federation Competition on the Delhi campus in October. Meanwhile, Miller and fellow UUPer Tom Recinella joined chefs from around the country in preparing meals for the “Say Thanks to a Hero” luncheon at the Javitz convention center. Meals were sold at $50 a plate and diners had a chance to mingle with those being honored — Sept. 11 emergency workers.
