The Voice January 2002 Sending hope in a time of great struggle and loss, UUP members have raised nearly $4,000 in support of NYSUT’s 9-11 Disaster Relief Fund.
At its Fall Delegate Assembly, the union pledged its commitment to raising funds to help address the needs of the heroes and victims of New York’s greatest tragedy. A resolution was passed to match individual member contributions up to $10,000 through Dec. 31, 2001.
NYSUT’s relief fund now totals more than $375,000 and will go toward helping those affected by the events of Sept. 11. The fund will aid NYSUT members and other unionists affected by the disaster, as well as provide emergency supplies to teachers and students in New York City schools. A portion of NYSUT funds will also support AFT’s Recovery Fund, a relief effort by the unions’ national affiliate.
Noting UUP’s efforts and recent public concerns surrounding the destination of donations to similar funds, union Treasurer Rowena Blackman-Stroud said: “To ensure that our members in need will not be overlooked, we avoided donating to larger funds. That way, our members will be the first to receive the benefits of their colleagues’ generosity and support.”
Checks from active and retired members should be made to NYSUT 9-11 Disaster Relief Fund. Members should note their chapter and send checks or money orders to UUP at P.O. Box 15143, Albany, N.Y. 12212-5143.
