Members wanted: CLUW addresses workplace issues — The Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW) has spent nearly 30 years improving the participation, position and influence of women in unions and society.

A non-partisan organization, CLUW was formed in 1974 to tackle the issues that affect working women — pay equity, health issues, affirmative action, and work and family conflicts — and to find a way for women to have a greater voice in leading the labor movement.

The coalition fights for adequate child-care facilities for working parents, pregnancy disability coverage, a decent minimum wage, safe workplaces and other laws that benefit all workers.

“Women and their unions are encouraged to take positive action against job discrimination in hiring and promotion,” said SUNY Buffalo UUPer Lorna Arrington, a member of CLUW’s National Executive Board. “Through leadership training, the members become informed advocates.”

For more information, contact CLUW by phone at (202) 223-8360, by e-mail at info@CLUW.org or by mail at CLUW, 1925 K St. NW, Suite 402, Washington, D.C. 20006.

On the Web: Yale launches online globalization journal — The Yale Center for the Study of Globalization in New Haven, Conn., has launched a new Internet journal, YaleGlobal Online, to examine the phenomenon of globalization in an easily accessible format.

Initially the site will post up to three original articles each week from scholars at Yale and other universities and think tanks. Articles will also be solicited from journalists, leaders in business, government and non-governmental sectors.

YaleGlobal will also post links to and archive relevant news articles from major international publications.

http://yaleglobal.yale.edu is free, allowing other media outlets to reprint original articles. A searchable archive will also serve as a free resource. Issues are also broken down by subject topics and region to make the site easier to navigate.

In addition, the journal will host a moderated discussion forum for individuals interested in a sustained dialogue. The Internet site will also post video of presentations and interviews.

In memoriam: UUP mourns loss of higher ed advocate — UUP and the university community in New York state are mourning the loss of Dallas Beal, the former SUNY administrator who, in recent years, had been an outspoken advocate for more funding for public higher education. Beal, above right, co-chair of the New York State Public Higher Education Conference Board (NYSPHECB) since its inception in 2001, died Dec. 29 of complications from heart surgery.

“Dallas quickly became known at the Capitol for his effective advocacy on behalf of SUNY and CUNY,” said board Vice Chair William Scheuerman, UUP president. “He brought with him a distinguished background in public higher education and a personality exuding warmth and decency.”

Beal was president of SUNY Fredonia from 1972-1985; he had begun his career at Fredonia in 1958. He was SUNY’s acting executive vice chancellor in 1984-85 before becoming president of the Connecticut State University system.

Beal came out of retirement two years ago when a group of advocates for public higher education in New York — acting out of concern for the future of SUNY and CUNY — formed NYSPHECB.
