And the Grammy nomination goes to — SUNY Potsdam’s Crane Wind Ensemble and its director have been nominated for Grammy Awards in three categories for their world premiere recording of William Bolcom’s “Concert Suite Eb Alto Saxophone and Band.” The group’s recording has been nominated for Best Classical Album, Best Classical Contemporary Composition and Best Orchestral Performance.

The Wind Ensemble — under the direction of Crane professor of music and UUPer Timothy Topolewski — recorded the album with faculty member Timothy McAllister on saxophone. McAllister also received a Grammy nod.

NASA taps professor to evaluate national program — SUNY Oswego physics professor Alok Kumar was recently named a NASA Opportunities for Visionary Academics (NOVA) faculty fellow for 2001-02.

Kumar was one of only five educators nationwide selected to review the NOVA program, which was launched in 1995 to encourage colleges to develop pre-service courses to help future teachers become more qualified to teach math, science and technology. The fellowship requires Kumar to evaluate participating college programs across the Northeast and as far away as Wisconsin and North Carolina.
