New mail rules at UUP headquarters

Mail will no longer be delivered directly to UUP headquarters, the result of stricter security precautions being instituted by NYSUT, UUP’s statewide affiliate and Albany landlord.

Under the new NYSUT regulations, all mail for 159 Wolf Road in Albany — headquarters for both UUP and NYSUT — will be delivered to a postal caller box before being picked up by courier.

UUP Secretary Eileen Landy urged that all union mail now be addressed as follows: 159 Wolf Road, Box 15143, Albany, N.Y. 12212-5143. However, she said mail without the caller box number would continue to make its way to headquarters.

Letters and packages will be opened in the NYSUT mailroom, where hand-addressed mail and mail of unknown origin will be mechanically decontaminated of any potentially hazardous substances. Mail and packages labeled “personal” or “confidential” will also be separated.

“UUP leaders, members and staff are advised not to hand-address any mail to headquarters in Albany,” said Landy. “The NYSUT precautions may delay some mail getting into the hands of officers and headquarters staff. Our members should take that into account when they communicate with us through the U.S. Postal Service.”

President William Scheuerman added: “The new regulations are aimed at protecting the health and safety of our staff, so it’s smart — and right — to be cautious.”
