UUP’s communications earn international kudos

The International Labor Communications Association (ILCA) has awarded UUP’s communications efforts — including its monthly publications, The Voice and The Connection —high accolades in five categories for outstanding communications.

Among the honors brought home are best use of graphics and best front page or cover for the May/June 2001 issue, “The Selling of Academe,” which featured an original illustration by freelancer Jason Yungbluth.

“Creative illustration and original style,” the judges commented. “This cover is a comic work of art that teams up with the lead article in the magazine, yet is strong enough to convey by itself the message of ‘the selling of academe.’”

Describing the UUP Web site as “a treasure trove of useful information presented in a clear and user-friendly format,” judges awarded it third place in the best Web site category and praised its design, noting that the site “offers a well-organized and well-selected wealth of information.”

The Connection won two honorable mentions in the categories of general excellence for the June and September 2000 issues and best front page for September 2000.

UUP was chosen from among more than 1,000 entries submitted by 139 member labor unions across the United States and Canada.

This year’s judges included editors, reporters, communications directors, international labor union leaders, public relations professionals, photographers and graphic designers.

UUP adds these awards to a growing list of ILCA honors for outstanding news and feature writing, design, photography, original artwork and editorial writing.
