UUP members rally, demand release of SUNY funds

Latham, NY––On Friday, May 2 at noon, hundreds of members of United University Professions and New York State United Teachers will rally at the state Capitol. The union members will demand the governorreverse his order to withhold $110 million to SUNY in revenues it collects to operate its campuses.

UUP President Phillip Smith will lead the rally. Other speakers will include NYSUT Executive Vice President Alan Lubin, several state legislators and two SUNY students from UAlbany. Speakers will warn the public about the harmful effects the governor’s spending freeze would have on SUNY, its students and SUNY hospital patients if the funds are not released.

The rally begins at noon on the east steps of the state Capitol (Eagle Street side).

UUP represents 34,000 academic and professional faculty at SUNY’s 29 state-operated campuses, and is an affiliate of NYSUT, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association, and the AFL-CIO.
