UUP Executive Board selects acting president - Frederick Floss succeeds William Scheuerman
The Executive Board of United University Professions (UUP) today appointed Frederick G. Floss, Ph.D., as the union’s acting president, filling the vacancy left by William E. Scheuerman, who resigned today to become president of the National Labor College in Silver Spring, Md.
Floss has served UUP in a statewide leadership position as Vice President for Academics since 2004.
“I am honored and humbled to have been appointed to lead this great union as acting president,” Floss said. “I look forward to maintaining and strengthening UUP’s national reputation for strong advocacy on behalf of our members and to continuing our joint efforts with our national affiliates, the American Federation of Teachers and the National Education Association, and with our state affiliate, the New York State United Teachers. With the support of UUP’s politically astute and active members, we will continue pushing SUNY to become the greatest public university in the nation.”
“I can’t think of anyone better suited to lead this union,” said former UUP President Scheuerman. “We’ve worked together for four years and Fred has brought enormous energy and competence to the office of VP for Academics. I am confident Fred will solidify UUP’s position as a key player at SUNY and the Capitol.”
Floss also serves as UUP’s chief contract negotiator, leading the union’s Negotiations Team in its effort to secure a fair and equitable contract to replace the four-year labor agreement that expired July 1, 2007.
The Executive Board also appointed Kenneth D. Kallio, Ph.D., as UUP’s acting Vice President for Academics, succeeding Floss in that position.
Floss is on leave from his faculty position of professor of economics and finance at Buffalo State College. He holds both a Ph.D. and an M.A. degree in economics from the University at Buffalo. Floss resides in the Buffalo suburb of Kenmore with his wife Lauren and their sons Daniel and Jeffrey.
Floss will serve as acting president until an election is conducted to select a candidate to fill the remainder of Scheuerman’s unexpired term that ends May 31, 2009. The election will be held at UUP’s Winter Delegate Assembly Feb. 8-9 in Albany.
Kallio is an associate professor and chair of the psychology department at SUNY Geneseo. He chairs the union’s Elections & Credentials Committee and is a member of UUP’s Negotiations Team. Kallio resides in Avon with his wife Colleen. They are the parents of adult sons Andrew and James.
UUP represents more then 34,000 academic and professional faculty on 29 New York State-operated campuses and is an affiliate of New York State United Teachers, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association, and the AFL-CIO.
