MEDIA ADVISORY FOR TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 2005
UUP President to testify on state budget needs for SUNY
-
On Tuesday, Feb. 8, United University Professions President William Scheuerman will tell the state Senate and Assembly fiscal committees that the State University system needs more state funding in the 2005-2006 state budget to avoid faculty layoffs and program cutbacks.
Scheuerman will join other leaders in higher education at the Senate Finance and Assembly Ways and Means Committees’ joint hearing, in Hearing Room B of the state Legislative Office Building. The hearing begins at 9:30 a.m. and Scheuerman is expected to testify between noon and 2:00 pm
UUP supports increased state funding for SUNY campuses, and opposes the Executive Budget proposals to:
* privatize SUNY hospitals;
* cut Medicaid funding to the hospitals;
* add a “sick tax” on all hospital revenues; and,
* cut financial aid to Educational Opportunity Program students.
- UUP represents more then 34,000 academic and professional faculty on 29 New York State-operated campuses, and is an affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO and New York State United Teachers (NYSUT).
