FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
November 3, 2005 -
Statement by William E. Scheuerman,
President of United University Professions
Regarding the SUNY Board of Trustees
2006-07 Budget Request -
“For years, we’ve been urging the SUNY Board of Trustees to act as advocates for the university. We’ve also called upon the Board to submit a budget based on the needs of individual campuses. We’re pleased that the Board has adopted our approach in its 2006-07 budget request.
“The proposal calls for an increase of $221 million in state funding for SUNY’s state-operated campuses and hospitals. It incorporates a number of the proposals I suggested in my recent testimony before the Senate and Assembly Standing Committees on Higher Education, including funds to accommodate enrollment growth for the growing numbers of community colleges graduates and transfer students who want to enroll in four-year programs at SUNY; expenditures for more full-time faculty; and a deficiency appropriation to cover increased energy costs in the current year.
“While this budget request is a first step, we look forward to working with the SUNY Board, the Governor, Legislature and other members of the SUNY community to advance this proposal.
“It looks like SUNY is clearly on the march, and we thank Chancellor John Ryan and SUNY Board Chairman Thomas Egan for their understanding and support.”
