FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
September 20 , 2005 Statement by William E. Scheuerman,President of United University ProfessionsRegarding the SUNY Board of TrusteesPursuit of the “Academic Bill of Rights”
“I find it astonishing that SUNY’s Board of Trustees has moved to even consider a proposal that would jeopardize our academic freedom.
“The move by the Board’s Academic Standards Committee to pursue the issue is particularly disturbing because this so-called ‘Academic Bill of Rights’ was discredited as being unnecessary according to a SUNY study released just a few months ago.
“This is a solution is search of a problem.”
Editor's note: At a meeting of the SUNY Board of Trustees in Albany today, the chairman of the Academic Standards Committee, Father John Cremins, announced that the panel would be taking up the "Academic Bill of Rights" at a meeting on Oct. 24th.
