UUP reacts to trustees’ budget request
-
Albany, Dec. 14, 2004 – United University Professions (UUP) President William E. Scheuerman said that the budget request put forward today by the State University of New York (SUNY) Board of Trustees is a positive first step on what UUP hopes will be a road toward a fair and adequate spending plan for the University.
“After years of requesting flat budgets – or worse – the trustees are finally joining UUP in being aggressive advocates for SUNY,” Scheuerman said. “They are right to seek the restoration of higher ed funding vetoed from the current year’s budget. And they are right to request money to cover the University’s collective bargaining agreements, hospital subsidies and inflation costs.
“UUP encourages Gov. Pataki to incorporate the trustees’ request into his Executive Budget, and then to enhance that request to ensure that all SUNY students continue to receive the high-quality education they expect and deserve.
“We have a lot of making up to do. The trustees have proposed a plan that brings us back to sea level; now it’s the governor’s turn to get us to the next level.”
- UUP represents more then 34,000 academic and professional faculty on 29 New York State-operated campuses, and is an affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO and New York State United Teachers (NYSUT).
